5TION is a five-member boy group under Irion Entertainment. The group consists of Roy, Noa, Len, Marine and Teo. Originally a five-member vocal ballad group under Star World Entertainment and Synnara Records, they debuted on December 27, 2001 with the studio album "True Image of New". The members were heavily marketed for their visual appeal and tall statures.
The group originally consisted of Kyne, Hyun, Roy, John and Lee Tae-kyung. However, after the release of their second studio album in 2002, Kyne left the group.
Following the underperformance of their second studio album, the group went on an indefinite hiatus in early 2003. During this period, two more members left the group; John, and Hyun in mid-2003, while Roy went on a hiatus in late-2003, leaving Lee Tae-kyung as the only active member. However, Lee Tae-kyung later left the group in 2003 due to mandatory military enlistment and has been retired from the entertainment industry since 2007.
In January 2004, John and Hyun debuted in the R&B-duo After Rain. They disbanded in early-2005 after only releasing a single album.
After 3 years of inactivity, the group released their third studio album "Deal in Coal" on February 1, 2006. The line-up consisted of returning members Roy and Kyne, and new members Woo Il, Chanmin, Seokho and Minsung. However, following the promotional failure of the album, the four new members left Star World Entertainment and the group, leading to 5TION's first official disbandment in late-2006.
Roy left the company on February 27, 2007 to pursue an acting career and Kyne stepped away from the music industry shortly after.
However, on October 25, 2010, the group released the digital single "Let's Love Again" under a new company, Cooking Music. The line-up consisted of returning members John, Hyun, and Woo Il.
Woo Il left the group in early 2011 to prepare for his mandatory military enlistment and launch a solo vocal career. The group briefly transitioned into a two-member duo, now under a new company, K Story Entertainment. They released the digital single "Deep In My Heart" on April 7, 2011, before John and Hyun's contracts with K Story Entertainment ended and they left the group and company.
In March 2012, Roy and Kyne took full ownership of the trademark for the group name and signed a co-management contract split between Yejeon Media & Entertainment and FATE Entertainment. Consisting of returned members Roy and Kyne and new members Len, Teo and Boseok, they released the mini-album "Rebirth" on March 22, 2012.
In early 2013, the group ended their contracts with FATE Entertainment and Yejeon Media & Entertainment, and relocated their activities to Japan following their domestic rebrand failure. Prior to the move, Teo left the group due to not wanting to relocate to a foreign country. The group signed a temporary contract with Akatsuki Label to manage them in Japan, while signing with Luminant Entertainment as their music distributor back in South Korea.
