EXID (initialism for “EXceed In Dreaming”) is a South Korean girl group formed by Banana Culture in 2012. The group consists of five members: Solji, Elly, Hani, Hyelin and Jeonghwa.
In 2011, famed producer Shinsadong Tiger began scouting for trainees to form a new girl group under AB Entertainment. Yuji, a trainee from JYP Entertainment was contacted first, who reached out to other trainees Hani, Haeryung and Jeonghwa who all were confirmed to be members. Shinsadong Tiger came across Elly, then an underground rapper and songwriter, and added her to the lineup. Dami, an existing AB trainee, was the sixth and final member to be added.
Originally named "WT", an acronym for "Who's That", the group changed their name to EXID a few months before their debut. EXID made their debut in February 2012 with the single “Whoz That Girl” from the digital single album HOLLA.
In April 2012, AB Entertainment officially announced the departure of Yuji, Dami and Haeryeong. They were replaced by new members Solji, a former member of the vocal duo 2NB and Hyelin, who was a candidate for EXID’s original lineup before she was dropped. The new five-member lineup returned in August 2012 with their first mini album Hippity Hop, which debuted at #13 on the Gaon Albums Chart.
In August 2014, EXID made a comeback with the single Up & Down. The track initially charted poorly, however the song slowly began to gain attention by early October, following a fan-recorded video of Hani performing the song that went viral on social media. “Up & Down” eventually reached the top 10 on real-time charts, and EXID took their first music show win on M Countdown, in January 2015.
EXID made their comeback with their second mini album Ah Yeah and the title track of the same name in April 2015. The song took four wins on Inkigayo and Show Champion. In May 2015, EXID performed at the Korean Music Festival in Los Angeles, California. On November 7, 2015, EXID won the 'MBC Music Star Award' at the 2015 Melon Music Awards.
On January 11, 2016, EXID signed with the Chinese entertainment company Banana Project. On March 2, EXID's record label Yedang Entertainment changed their name to Banana Culture, launching a joint venture company in Seoul with Banana Project.
Prior to the release of their fifth mini album We in May 2019, it was announced that members Hani and Jeonghwa had decided to not renew their contracts with Banana Culture. On January 15, 2020, Hyelin left the company, followed by Solji on February 5, and Elly on March 25, following the closure of Banana Culture. All members went on hiatus to pursue individual activities.
In 2022, the group reunited for their tenth debut anniversary, releasing the single album X. During this period, all members assumed greater responsibility for the group’s business and creative activities. Hani secured the trademark rights to the group name, allowing the members to conduct activities under the EXID name independently.
