Kim Ji-yong or Alexander Kim, widely known as Okasian, is a Korean-American rapper who debuted independently in 2010. His stage name 'Okasian' is a compound of the words Ok and Asian, with the pronunciation similar to the word 'Occasion'. He was born in Los Angeles then moved to Korea as a child before returning to the United States during his teenage years to attend college. He studied biology at Pennsylvania State University, but soon shifted his focus toward music.
Okasian made his musical debut with his mixtape Preseason #1 in 2010 and released his first official single, “You’re the One,” in 2011. His debut studio album, Boarding Procedures was released the following year. He quickly became known for his fluid transitions between English and Korean in his lyrics. He was a founding member of The Cohort, a South Korea-based hip-hop collective that included prominent names such as Keith Ape, Bryan Chase, and B-Free.
Okasian rose to international prominence with his feature on Keith Ape’s viral hit “It G Ma,” which became a global sensation and a touchstone for Korean trap music.
He began his career with Hi-Lite Records (2011–2016), then went independent for a short period before signing with YG Entertainment’s sub-label, The Black Label, in 2017. After his contract expired he joined Universal Music Korea in 2025.
